Telling people “you’re going to get infected, better get used to it” is not a public health message. It’s a message of complete government abandonment.

These past few weeks, I've noticed a precipitous drop in people willing to talk about the current state of the pandemic. It feels very..lonely. My experience in infectious diseases and evaluating pandemic preparedness has not convinced me we're remotely ready for the next thing.

There has been a flurry of reporting about 'irrational' vaccinated 18-34 year olds who still worry about catching COVID.

But journalists are making huge assumptions and missing the story. Using myself as an example, let me break down how they misunderstand my COVID caution.

Just thinking of how cool it is that anti-vax folks love to say that people who support masks and vaccines are “like nazis” even though actual, literal nazis still exist and they are all anti-vaxxers who protest mask requirements.

Note who the government is stepping in to help here. Not the nurses who’ve been chronically underpaid & exploited for decades. They’re acting because shareholders & corporations that own health systems complained this is hurting their bottom line. What an FU to RNs everywhere.

Hey #Congress , maybe instead of capping travel nurse salaries, you 1) pass mandatory safe staffing ratios or 2) limit the amount of profit insurance companies can pay on every dollar collected or maybe 3) pass f*cking election reforms so we don't have a dictator in 2024.

If you have to clarify “no, no, my plan isn’t eugenics, I just think we should infect everyone because only the weak will die”, I hate to break it to you but your plan actually is eugenics.

There are two realities in America: those who work in hospitals & know firsthand how bad it’s gotten, how close the system is to collapse, the depth of the staffing crisis & how far patient care has fallen…

and then there is everyone else.

Just thinking about my pregnant patient with type 1 diabetes and obesity who told me today that because of her religion she won’t get vaccinated unless it’s life threatening. Hi, it’s life threatening.
