@AWhaleADay

A picture and fact about whales each day.

I'm not a marine biologist or paleontologist but I am followed by an intimidating amount of them.

'We’ve been here before. John Lilly also leaned into Seti, promoting the idea that dolphins were an alien intelligence with a complex language. His weak evidence ultimately evaporated in a cloud of hype and hallucinogens.'

Luke Rendell @lrendell.bsky.social formulating what many of us think and worry about! Fantastic piece 🙏🏻 Let's not propagate this idea that human language is the 'ultimate goal', to which every other species communication should be compared to. Anthropocentrism is a dangerous practice 🤚🏻

'We should strive to understand and value these awesome creatures for what they are, not for how they might sooth our cosmic loneliness.'

A very thoughtful article on the research into talking to whales.

There has been a lot of hype recently about 'whale language' and many people sent me some of these articles. I thought I'd share one by my mentor Luke Rendell @lrendell.bsky.social as some food for thought and a reminder not to impose our human limitations on other species.

Luke Rendell @lrendell.bsky.social The Conversation SMRU Philip Hoare Brandon Keim Luke this is a thoughtful piece that vividly illustrates the dangers of attributing unique abilities to a single group (so often cetaceans) that boils down to ignorance of the immense diversity of complex animal behaviour across so many different taxa!
Brilliant

'The North Atlantic right whale Road to Recovery describes our comprehensive efforts to address threats to the species and monitor recovery progress.'

All going just perfectly isn't it.

Road to Recovery needs a bit of roadwork?

Most turtle species are endangered, largely due to bycatch from commercial fishing.

Even if turtles seem uninjured when caught in a net, gas emboli ('the bends') develop when they are forced to the surface too quickly leading to organ damage & death.

The best thing aboutthis article is Luke Rendell @lrendell.bsky.social clearly describing the need for experts to be involved in the interpretation of behavioral/biological AI data. 🤩🙌cnn.com/2024/05/13/wor…
