Great thread. Agree with almost everything here except Smith’s “greatness” (though it’s possible this is in the loose colloquial sense of decent/not at all bad). Haven’t read all of her novels but the 3 or 4 I have were enjoyable but incredibly patchy prize-circuit lit fic
