Today I met Minister Liu Jianchao, from the International Department of the Chinese Communist Party.

We had a frank discussion about bilateral relations, including consular matters, and the importance of international law, rules and norms to peace and security in the region.

Australia and China have come a long way in the 50 years since Gough Whitlam made his historic visit.

This is a relationship that matters to Australia and to the stability of our region.

Our relationship with China is important and I am committed to advocating Australia’s interests as we work to shape the decades ahead.
