A wet 2023 has done wonders for recharge in CA. But, Ellen Hanak told San Francisco Chronicle's Kurtis Alexander, more is needed.

“There are still deficits....It’s very encouraging to see the high numbers for 2023. But we’re not there yet.” sfchronicle.com/climate/articl…

In the 1970s Jaap Kalff founded McGill's Limnology Research Centre, with its field station on Lake Memphrémagog. It became a world renowned group led by Kalff, Frank Rigler, Bill Leggett, Rob Peters and Joe Rasmussen. They trained generations of aquatic scientists (including me).

USA reservoir secondary production (i.e., ~ 4.5 billion kg/y) is comparable to estimates of global amounts of fish harvest and capture production from the literature. The number is also on the scale of those important for the global carbon cycle.

Patterns in total standing stock (kg) were different from those standardized by area (kg/ha). Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma have the greatest fish TSS, but none of these were in the top 5 when using this per captia analogue, suggesting they are not as innately productive. 3/

To get the “magic number” we developed a flexible reservoir classification tool that groups similar reservoir types, such that any reservoir can change class based on changes to discharge & storage management. 2/

“One fish where 25,000 used to be,' says CalTrout's Russell Marlow in George Skelton @ LAT latest column.

Southern steelhead are now endangered under CA's ESA, an essential move to save them from extinction. We were proud to lead the charge. Los Angeles Times

Upland Summer (Ameletus inopinatus).

Clinging on in the South West Peak in Staffordshire, Cheshire & Derbyshire.

Agony that this stunning Arctic-Alpine species does not have a future in the vast majority of Britain & Ireland.

U.S. reservoirs hold billions of pounds of fish, a @ucdaviswater study found. Southern reservoirs have most 🐟. As we remove dams and restore natural waterways, we also need to better manage for conservation the ones we've built. Andrew Rypel Christine Parisek ucdavis.edu/climate/news/u…

Congrats to Christine Parisek Fran De Castro & the whole team!

This turned out to be some fun science that challenged us & taught us interesting things, including how reservoirs, though unnatural, provide ecosystem services that we should consider. Check out Christine's🧵👇

So excited to see our paper on stream drying is now out ESA Frontiers! It has been a long road with contributions from many wonderful collagues along the way. Here's the moment at Albert Ruhí's wedding where I learned the paper had been accepted

These photos of the middle Klamath River were taken on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 from the Klamath-Trinity confluence to the Salmon River mouth. In terms of dissolved oxygen and turbidity, river conditions remain normal for this time of year.
