Remarkable to see Aurora borealis in the city despite all the light pollution: that’s a first for me. Son sent us a picture and I thought he was abroad until I went outside myself

There is a music festival in Napier, New Zealand called ‘destroy Napier’. On the London statue of Napier of Magdala, someone has written ‘destroy’: is this the most niche graffiti ever?

So we know about Seasonal Affective Disorder. Is there a term for the opposite, where you're so euphoric it's still light that you stay outside until it's way too late to start cooking a proper dinner?

It's May, at last.

'The trees are coming into leaf
Like something almost being said;
The recent buds relax and spread,
Their greenness is a kind of grief.

Is it that they are born again
And we grow old? No, they die too,
Their yearly trick of looking new
Is written down in

What good luck to have a Polish visitor on the day I have to deal with this specimen! Quite an early record for an invasive bark beetle in Europe. It is actually very precise and even has the tree species - in the famous Bialoweska Forest near Belarus border.

Madagascan weevils camouflaged against lichen encrusted twigs. Can you see them all? Display piece from probably 1950s public galleries ⁦Natural History Museum

Interesting how the AI on I-naturalist gets thrown by the fungal infestation of this fly- top hit is a dormouse! (And ‘expected nearby’ for the dormouse is a bit of a stretch in my opinion)
