These two menhirs are part of the alignments of Lampouy in Médréac (Ille-et-Vilaine) most of which are now fallen or broken. There were at least 4 rows which seem to converge towards La Roche Pointue posted yesterday. At least one other row runs at a different angle.

Look how closely the profile of this standing stone near Conwy tracks the contours of the hillock to its west. Significant, or coincidence? More 1/

This early panoramic view by local archaeologist Zacharie Le Rouzic is a good attempt at showing the extent of the alignments at Menec in Carnac but their true scale can only really be seen on modern aerial photographs. 12 rows of over 1,000 menhirs running for a kilometre.

The chunky granite menhir of La Longue Pierre in St-Pierre-Église (Manche) is 4.2m high and roughly square in section with each face just over a metre wide coming to a rounded top. Card by L.G.B. c. 1905 and reflects a contemporary description that it was in a poorly kept meadow.

The menhir of Kergadiou in Plourin (Finistère) is among the top ten in Brittany and stands 8.5m above the ground. It has been deliberately shaped and smoothed over most of its surface. Nearby is another even bigger fallen one. Card by F.T., Brest c.1908. .

RIP Annie Nightingale. Such sad news. A pioneer on both radio and TV, a hugely important champion of great music, and a genuinely lovely person, as today's beautiful tributes prove
