April 11 was chosen as #NationalSubmarineDay to celebrate the Navy’s purchase of the USS Holland, the first modern commissioned submarine, in 1900. Only .02% of veterans have submarine service on their military record, making it one of the rarest jobs a service member can have.

April 6, 1917, marks the beginning of America’s involvement in WWI. Three years later in 1920, disabled WWI veterans, including DAV founder Robert Marx, saw a need for an organization to protect service members as they struggled to reintegrate into society, and DAV was founded.
