Craig Emerson The article has a sour grapes flavour to it. The fact is the voluntary code is not working, and breaking Coles and Woollies up is not practical or viable even though the populists like the LNP and the Greens call for it. Mandatory codes & stiff penalties are the obvious solution.

This is the column claiming my review of the food and grocery code was politically timed. In truth it was required as a result of the voluntary code that the columnist co-authored. Without the review the code would have lapsed automatically next year.

This column by an architect of the voluntary grocery code of conduct questions my independence and claims the review was politically motivated.

As a code architect, he should know the review was a statutory requirement for 2024 back in 2015 when the code came into force.

Not even Aldi supports forced divestiture of supermarkets as advocated by the Coalition and the Greens.

Who would buy the divested stores?

They be forced to close, costing workers their jobs and shoppers a nearby supermarket.

Inflation is falling sharply in China and in many other nations. Not so in US, probably due to massive fiscal stimulus.

In Australia, rents and insurance are high and rising.

Yet economists here say we must keep interest rates higher for longer.

Why? To crush renters? 😳😳

Really interesting to see Peter Dutton at odds with the NFF, ACCC, Dairy Farmers/Vegetable Growers/Small Business Council etc etc. …who all agree on simple changes needed to make the supermarket sector more fair and transparent.

Guessing Peter hasn’t done the shopping recently.
