Doctors have undertaken to look after their patients, not the immigration department, and have every right to recommend a safer place of discharge.

When patients are in hospital they become the doctors' responsibility, which includes ensuring a safe post- discharge location for them.

Doctors, nurses, paramedics and all health professionals note - if your patient is shackled with no valid reason then you are within your professional rights to ask that the restraints be removed. Arriving in Australia without the correct visa 8 years ago is not a valid reason.

People trapped in these centres and APODs cannot request that security stand away, cannot refuse room searches and cannot avoid frequent daily pat downs from guards.
