#OTD in 1975, the old £10 banknote featuring Florence Nightingale was issued. #Nightingale was a social reformer who was instrumental in improving nursing standards during the Crimea War.

On the 12th February 1944 a Japanese submarine torpedoed the SS Khedive Ismail, 51 nurses lost their lives. The ship took 2 minutes to sink resulting in the loss of 1,297 people including 77 women. Only 208 men and 6 women survived.

This time last year, we launched our fundraising appeal to bring Nightingale's Wheelchair to London. The campaign was successful thanks to The Company of Nurses Charitable Trust and our other generous donors. The wheelchair is now on display at the museum for visitors to see.

We are pleased to announce that starting from next week, Tuesday 13th February 2024, the Florence Nightingale Museum will now also be open on Tuesdays. The museum remains closed on Mondays. Our new opening hours are: Tuesday - Sunday from 10am until 5pm (last entry 4:30pm).

Museum Collection Highlight:
This poster entitled 'The Nightingale Fund' is dated 28th December 1855 ( #OTD #OnThisDay ). During the Crimean War, a public fund was set up to honour Florence. Over £44,000 was raised, the equivalent of £2 million today. (🧵1/3)
