TCA Northstar at the domestic terminal in Gander c. 1955. There were 2 terminals at the airport in post WWII. The international terminal at H22 adjoined to the domestic terminal by a covered walkway so domestic passengers could enjoy the amenities on the international side.

This famous image was taken at Gander in WWII. The Canadian Army provided ground security & the RCAF provided air security, from enemy invasion. This protection also provided extra training for soldiers & airmen before being shipped out to fight overseas.

It is Iceberg season here in NL. A view of an iceberg taken just off the coast of Nfld a couple of years ago by my son. Recreation flying has its rewards this time of year.

The control tower in Gander c.1972 with a view of a BOAC B707 being serviced on the airport's ramp. About the the only technical equipment in the tower then was a VHF radio & a light gun (how about that ashtray 😆)

The runways widths at Gander, built in 1939, were R 09-27 at 365 M, the other 3 at 180 M. All runways lengths were approx. 1500 M. Little was known about the expected size of future aircraft. Enough pavement had been used to construct a standard two lane highway 175 Km long.

During the 1940s & 50s, flights flying between North America & Europe, because of aircraft's short fuel range in this era, had to use Gander airport for refueling. Here is a map depicting those air routes provided to us by directionoftravel.com

Gander WWII. A cat patrols bombers on the lookout for rats. The RCAF imported cats from Canada to protect the airport from being invaded by these rodents. Not only to protect the warehouse supplies but also rubber hoses on waiting aircraft. ganderairporthistoricalsociety.org/_html_war/Cats…
