This is the southeast corner of Eliza Ballou Garfield’s bedroom in the Garfield home. She was President James A. Garfield’s mother.

This corner is representative of the room’s larger decor theme, which is “put up as many pictures of my son as possible.”

James & Lucretia Garfield's first-floor 'summer bedroom.' The fireplace surround & mantel were taken from the parlor & moved to this room in 1904.

Today, the bedroom & parlor have been restored to their original 1880 appearance.

It’s #PublicServiceRecognitionWeek and we are public servants so we will now sit back & let you tell us how wonderful we are. Just kidding, of course.

But really, public service is a calling & this week honors all who answer it at federal, state, county, local, & tribal levels.

We told you yesterday that a family of Red Shouldered Hawks has built a nest in our London Plane tree. We’re giving them a wide berth for safety of all visitors, volunteers, staff, & hawks.

Here’s a great image of one of our hawks a staff member here staff captured yesterday.

Someone we know recently got a jury duty summons and it said one reason you might be able to get out of it is if your presence is not in the public’s best interest and our Tweetmaster General was like “I would just say ‘Sorry Your Honor but the American people need my tweets.’”
