After the release of ‘London Calling’ a group of fans followed The Clash from city to city, hoping to convince the band to play a May Day benefit. Joe heard the fans out and taped “1st May take a holiday” to his guitar for the band’s US TV debut on ABC’s ‘Fridays’ show in 1980.
