When society no longer respects teachers, students won't respect them, and soon there will be no teachers, leaving a void in education that will compromise the very future of society.

We are teaching in an age where accountability has been shifted almost entirely from students/parents to TEACHERS.

This is what it’s all about.

We can't expect teachers to work 60-70 hrs per week, but then say self care is important.

Play is a fundamental mechanism through which children's brains process information. It really is how children learn!

We've always had SEL in schools. It was called recess, play, & classes like Music, Art, Physical Education. But they have been reduced or removed to spend more time on testing, & then we wonder why students lack social/ emotional skills & misbehavior that comes with lack of it.

Morale

It takes time to become a highly effective teacher. It also takes time to become a highly effective leader. Both need patience, support, encouragement, praise and effective mentoring. With focus on maximizing strengths, not weaknesses.

Students shouldn't be the only reason a teacher stays. Few leave a school where they feel support, encouragement, praise, and appreciation, which create a culture where the whole staff can thrive.

Adults in schools,

Imagine you work at a school where you feel:
Mistrusted
Disliked
Excluded
Unvalidated
Harrassed
Out of place
Unknown
Not believed in
And sometimes even Invisible.

Now imagine you're 9 years old.

Maybe instead of proficiency scales we should present support scales.

'This is how I will support you.'

vs.

'This is how I will grade you.'

The scale would define the teaching that supports the learning.

We are supporters, not graders.

Different has to be different.

A student being flagrantly rude to a teacher should be an earthshaking event. It is in other countries. We live in a teacher-despising culture.
