“It is the social crisis,” he says. “And I don’t think people have woken up to the scale of poverty that is affecting children.”

Some people have responded to that chart with 'That can’t be right', or 'We can’t be worse than America'.

I’m afraid the chart is right. 15 years ago the UK’s record on homelessness *was* not too dissimilar to other developed countries, but things have rapidly deteriorated.

Appalling. A top priority for any Government must be that these numbers come down. It is entirely possible to address this level of destitution. It is a choice not to.

Record number of food parcels (3.1m) given out by The Trussell Trust last year, nearly double 5 years ago.

As our Iain Porter points out: 'This is not what an economy returning to full health looks like.'

We cannot ignore this in an election year.

The country of opportunities, spurned by people for a 'lifestyle choice' to stay on benefits, that Hunt & Stride describe in their Times piece is completely divorced from the reality millions of people are facing as they struggle to afford the basics, often despite being in work

Deeply concerning to see Jeremy Hunt & Mel Stride publish this today as The Trussell Trust reveals foodbanks had to provide 3.1 million emergency food parcels - double 5 years ago. Over 1/2 those on Universal Credit can't even afford to eat properly. 1/4

It's publication day for the pamphlet I've been working on with Gordon Brown

Nice write-up of the rescue plan for 'austerity's children' from Patrick Butler here. I'll post the full doc and my own take on Prospect when they're live later

'The stigma associated with poverty, and the lack of dignity, self-worth and feelings of shame it can give rise to, can be as devastating and debilitating as material want.'

⬇ This Centre for Young Lives report shows schools can help tackle the impact of poverty, with the right support.

🤝But we also need to take the pressure off schools by reducing poverty in the first place - with good jobs, affordable homes and a stronger social security system.

🗣️ Rachel Reeves was right to say today that economic success is about more than lines on a graph. People's experience of the economy is just as important.

But the Shadow Chancellor has failed to set out how people on the lowest incomes will see their living standards improve 🧵

Devastating set of statistics on homelessness out today.

To hear from the people experiencing homelessness and a good overview of its drivers I recommend Lewis Goodall The News Agents investigation into temporary accommodation globalplayer.com/podcasts/episo…

Today, the government is publishing a consultation on the future of PIP.

🗣️ Almost two thirds of people in destitution have a chronic health condition or disability. People in this position shouldn't be used as a political football. We need action, not rhetoric from politicians.

Brilliant work from colleagues in Scotland on how to redesign the childcare system.

Universal childcare is the goal but low income households must be first in line - unlike the English system where the poorest face disproportionate costs or are locked out all together.
