Conflict in Sudan and its impact:

population data show that most displaced by the conflict are in Sudan or neighbouring countries. But an increasing number are moving further afield.

Useful data page:

“If Sudan’s middle class and its civil society are destroyed and displaced, what will be left of the country? Who will rebuild it? Peace has to prevail before it’s too late.”

From my statement at the Paris Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and the Neighbouring Countries.

It is unfortunately a rare event, but in some places refugees can make the choice of returning home safely — for example in Cameroon, where 10,000 people — among those who had fled to Chad two years ago — have now returned to their homes, with UNHCR support. We wish them well!

There will be many elections in 2024. Some politicians are already using the slogan of “invasion” by migrants and refugees to gain votes.

That argument is both wrong and useless in responding to the challenges of human mobility.

Solutions exist and can be just and effective.
