MassDOT is currently conducting a Direct Vision study, which will measure how much a driver can see from the cab of various vehicles, helping to avoid serious crashes.

This #MAleg required study is the first to be completed by a state DOT and uses the @FHWA Safe System approach.

We are starting by measuring a sample of 20 trucks in the MA fleet. These range from large pickup trucks to heavy-duty snow plows, street sweepers to line-striping trucks. We’re also making a training video so others can learn how to measure their fleets after the study is over.

The Direct Vision Study has invited 10 municipalities to participate. We wanted to make sure cities and towns could benefit from this knowledge and spread awareness of Direct Vision within their communities. First up were City of Lynn, MA and @CityofEverettMA.

Stay tuned in the coming months for more updates on this study, as our GIS team and other #MassDOT staff help perform the data analysis that will give us the results about each truck’s visibility and associated blind zones.
