My Chair is better than your Chair #162

He's dealt with more than a few challenges over the course of his career, but this might just be the hardest one Gus O'Donnell has ever taken on!

I'll be providing solidarity by eating one biscuit for every push up Gus completes

Today's Office for National Statistics (ONS) labour market stats reinforce the picture presented by Office for Budget Responsibility on economic inactivity.

Number entirely outside the workforce is ↗️ on the quarter and ↗️ on the year, with long-term sickness an ongoing concern.

Today's jobs stats: pretty subdued again.

- Employment rate still well down on pre-Covid
- Half a million more outside labour force, especially older and young people
- This is holding back recovery, with 900k unfilled jobs
- Need to do more to reach and support people...

Inching forwards, weighed down. Pro Bono Economics's analysis now out

The economy is turning a corner, but it's doing so very slowly.

Take GDP per capita. It's on the up, but not due to return to its pre-pandemic peak until the middle of 2025 1/

The good news is the we're turning the household income corner, and sooner than was projected at the Autumn Statement. But it's a really slow recovery. And we're starting the journey £1,400 per person down on pre-pandemic projections and £8,245 down on pre-financial crisis trend

Good to hear the Chancellor make the case today for GDP per person being a better measure of living standards than overall GDP. Worth noting then that the OBR is now projecting a slight upgrade on GDP relative to the Autumn Statement, but a slight downgrade on GDP per person
