The kitchen table strategists who so casually talk about the inevitability of war in Asia and elsewhere should think about what ⁦Peter FitzSimons⁩ says here. Inevitability, stupidity and immorality are of a piece. There is no nobility in carnage.

'Our people voted down the Santos offer. I knew no one could take that from us. But Santos and the Tribunal tried.'

'Santos took us to the Tribunal and despite our best efforts, the decision went against us, taking away our native title rights without any compensation at all.'

This fact has serious political implications for any government, especially one that trumpets its social policy sensitivities - just ask all those young professionals who are paying off their HECS and facing a lifetime as a renter.

Remember, this is a comparison between GROWTH rates. Wages still lag far behind prices in real terms. Crack open the champers when wages catch up. On present trends, it will be a while before you do.
