Today marks Victory in Europe Day.

Unfortunately, Europe was only able to breath freedom from both sides of its lungs after 1989.

It is this struggle with totalitarianism that obliges us to defend our hard-won freedoms & to support those still struggling to achieve it today

The one-time fighter against communism is today embracing it in its most naked form. Seeing this is both sad and shameful

When I was growing up in totalitarian communist-ruled Czechoslovakia, the regime banned music and any acts of expression that it saw as harmful.

It’s shameful that we allowed that sad history to become Hong Kong’s reality today.

Until we learn to send consistent messages, and to call spade a spade, we can never achieve balanced relations with the PRC - nor can we protect our democracy.

This has to represent a turning point.

These are actions suited to hybrid warfare, not the “mutual respect” of which Beijing and London regularly boast.

China under Xi Jinping is not a friend.

Remove the blinkers. Our China strategy has failed. We need some realism fast.
