In April 1910 laureate Paul Ehrlich announced the discovery of the first medicine that could cure syphilis. The drug in question had originally been thought to be ineffective but Erlich decided to give it another go testing it on infected rabbits - to his delight it worked.

in 1906 Pierre Curie died in a tragic accident. Marie Skłodowska Curie - his wife and research partner - was offered a government pension but she refused. Instead, she continued the pair's studies and in 1911 became the first person to be awarded two Nobel Prizes.
