Benjamin List and David MacMillan developed an ingenious tool for building molecules – organocatalysis – which has made chemistry greener. Researchers can now more efficiently construct new molecules and have even identified an organocatalyst that can break down plastic waste.

Smithies shared the 2007 medicine prize for discovering how to use embryonic stem cells to create genetic changes in mice. Today, genetically-altered mice are an invaluable tool for research.

Andrew Scullion (pictured) was one of the first babies to have a bone marrow transplantation – a procedure that has saved countless lives.

It was developed by medicine laureate Donnall Thomas who performed the first successful bone marrow transplant between two humans in 1956.

In April 1910 laureate Paul Ehrlich announced the discovery of the first medicine that could cure syphilis. The drug in question had originally been thought to be ineffective but Erlich decided to give it another go testing it on infected rabbits - to his delight it worked.

#OnThisDay in 1906 Pierre Curie died in a tragic accident. Marie Skłodowska Curie - his wife and research partner - was offered a government pension but she refused. Instead, she continued the pair's studies and in 1911 became the first person to be awarded two Nobel Prizes.

#Didyouknow that the radioactive silvery metal 'Curium' was discovered by chemistry laureate Glenn Seaborg (pictured)?

Seaborg produced and identified curium in July 1944. Seaborg himself also has a chemical element named after him, called Seaborgium.
