Anyone looking at the pregnant ewes desperately trying to eat the hay wouldn't think there is a whole row of hay windbreaks round the corner they can feed from as much as they like!

Tiny twin 2 slow to get up so need to keep close eye on him to ensure feeding well in next few hours. Hurdles quickly formed a pen with hay bales as windbreak
Also kept other ewes away as they try to get near the amniotic fluid on membranes & grass

After settling Dorothy & twins, then checking rams I come back to house & hear a newborn bleating loudly
In corner of field by house Ivy had popped out her twins clearly in quick succession
Tiny 2nd twin was shouting objection to being ignored & un-licked in bitter northerly wind

It is COLD here in Orkney with the strong northerly wind
Dorothy has few teeth left so moved her onto lovely fresh grass in a pen with shelter. Mum & daughters seem very happy. After years of single males, being a fantastic mum, she has given us 2 potential breeding ewes :-)

As anticipated Dorothy lambed overnight. Lovely pair of twins. She's our oldest ewe at 9 so I'll keep an eye on things over next few hours & possibly move her to a field pen with good grass & a shelter just to give her a boost & check all well with the lambs

Friddy (Kornelie's mother) has just popped out a lovely lively pair of good sized twins. Quick labour- she's got them in a well sheltered spot. Great mother who has had twins before so they should all be fine in that spot overnight. Father is Corin, same as for Kornelie's lamb

A lovely photo of another pair of twins from the Lochend flock in Shapinsay. This is ewe Clare & father of these fine male lambs is L.Cedric who has unusual tan markings on him, so his nickname is Erik the Red.

Update on Kornelies's lovely ewe lamb. I always keep a closer eye on lambs from 1st time mothers. I don't know how good a mother they will be. Well I think young Kornelie deserves a gold star. She's very protective, her lamb is alert & active & passing meconium

Edinvale Farm πŸŒ±πŸ‚ From what I know of NZ farming, which isn’t much; they have an advantage of economies of scale over us.

Also we rely on our Muslim population to buy a lot of our production of lamb, which at this time of year, end of Ramadan, goes up, along with the price.

It is sad this thread needed to be written in response to some ideological nonsense about the essential role of grazing animals in biodiversity, provision of nutritious food, & ignorance of the natural biogenic carbon cycle.
Some very good information in the thread & comments
