The poorest provinces in South Africa are Eastern Cape and Limpopo. Their citizens have been voting for the same party since our democracy began in 1994. Will people of Eastern Cape and Limpopo vote for a different party this month? Clearly the ANC has failed them. Big question.

I wrote in my recent column that Africa's problems won't be solved by foreign aid, or by foreign institutions and governments. It's us Africans who will solve our problems. Sorry, President Joe Biden can't help us.

South African political parties are promoting welfare ahead of the election. Surprised? Don’t be. Welfare is a way of buying votes. Promise people “free” money to get their vote. As economist Tom Sowell once said: “The welfare state is the oldest con game in the world.”

What South Africa needs is a stronger, competitive energy market that will weaken Eskom. Not long ago, economist Kevin Lings said that Eskom will be one of the many suppliers of energy in the market. If that really happens, it will be good for South Africa.

Billions and billions of taxpayers' money have been spent on the failing Eskom over the years. The consequences of incompetence and corruption and socialist mentality.

South Africa deserves better.

Marriages are on the decline in South Africa and other parts of the world and that's not good for societies. Maybe the World Economic Forum should discuss this issue at the next gathering in Davos? How about that?
