There're few billionaires whose hobby is fundamental physics. Jim Simons built the largest private funder in this field

It has made an enormous difference and continues to do so by funding education, experiments and researchers, more important today than ever!

RIP Jim Simons

Continuing on the technical terms, ;) the main phase of this storm (according to the real-time Dst) is -231 nT. Nearly superstorm level (-250 nT) and not seen for *many* years I believe. wdc.kugi.kyoto-u.ac.jp/dst_realtime/2… read more about red aurora here: blog.aurorasaurus.org/?p=2030

Newly-discovered , 2024 JT3, will come much closer than our geostationary satellites late tonight/early tomorrow morning. It will brighten to magnitude 13 as it passes over the North Pole. To see it, you will need a location-specific ephemeris such as JPL Horizons.

Renormalization group without any math:

For the longest time we discovered more fundamental structures in nature. The further we zoom in the more new structure we see.

The discovery of quarks is a good example

Molecules → Atoms → nuclei → protons → quarks
