For those unfamiliar with the North East, Elswick is to put it mildly very much not a leafy student enclave (cf. Tish Murtha), and neither are the South Tyneside areas with Green gains, so there’s something demographically & psephologically nuanced going on here

🟢 Elswick ward, which Greens just gained from Labour with an enormous swing, is **39% Muslim**.

It seems obvious to me that Labour's response to Gaza just cost it this once safe council seat.

Looking through the pics of the Labour campaign, it’s really striking that it has returned to the small political party that it was in the New Labour years - essentially just a party of MPs, councillors & a handful of loyalists. It’s what Starmer wanted, but it should worry them.

Labour went into South Tyneside defending 14 seats. Ended up winning 4.
