Gdansk Shipyard Gate 2. In August 1980, the Interfactory Strike Committee (soon to be Solidarity) painted 21 Demands of Poland's rulers on large boards, now hanging in the superb museum. A privilege to visit the site of such collective courage that inspired 12 year old me so much

The courage of the Georgian people, night after night, in the face of violence, arrests & organised state intimidation, is truly inspiring. Amidst all the turmoil that occupies our thoughts, don't forget the people of Georgia, standing up for their freedom.

The only Gdańsk church to escape destruction by the advancing Soviet army in 1945 is the city’s first Catholic church: St Nicholas’ Church, founded in 1340. Soviet soldiers spared it from the instruction to destroy all churches because it was dedicated to Russia’s patron saint.

The 42-foot high wooden anatomical clock in Gdansk's St Mary's Church is a thing of beauty. Below, an extraordinary medieval calendar charting each saint's festival day. Above a one-hand zodiac clock. On top, Adam & Eve ringing the bell every 15 minutes for over half a millennium

This YouGov “if today’s poll was a general election” has caused a predictable stir. On another note look at the vote:seats ratios

Cons: 18%, 13 seats
LibDems: 9%, 44 seats
Greens: 7%: 2 seats
SNP: 3.1%, 19 seats
Reform: 13%, 0 seats

Our electoral system is a very strange beast

Climate experts were increasingly saying that keeping heating below 1.5C is near impossible, yet it remains the global goal. So I asked hundreds of top IPCC scientists what they thought. What they said shocked even me…

Expert thread on the MoD data breach, calling for:

a) perspective on the incident ('at the lower end of serious')
b) perspective on what adapting cyber-norms can do in response (not much)
c) more attention on MoD contractor supply-chains where cyber-vulnerabilities are highest

Happy Birthday (again) to Michael Palin.

John Cleese was asked on Desert Island Discs what one luxury he would choose to have with him. 'Michael Palin', he said.

48 hours of watching votes being counted reminded me of Sesame Street's magnificent character 'The Count', which reminded me of my favourite Sesame Street sketch, & possibly the best bit of children's TV ever made: Alistair Cookie's Monsterpiece Theatre.

Just found a men's bathroom tucked away in the recesses of a corridor inside Parliament that I am convinced no-one else knows about or uses. I'm considering doing a George Costanza, moving in & decking it out with all my toiletries.
