The UCLA Palestine solidarity encampment was attacked for two days, first by masked counter-protesters and second by the LAPD, the California Highway Patrol, and the LASD.

Yesterday, UVA's administration tried to convince the university & Charlottesville communities that its grotesque overreaction to peaceful protests was justified. It failed. We know too much about what happened on Saturday & in 2017 when UVA let violent white supremacists march.

The protesters were indeed peaceful & had been for four days. But they broke newly rewritten rules prohibiting tents. Somehow UVA's President Jim Ryan has convinced himself that riot police armed with automatic weapons was a legitimate response. Madness. Reckless madness.

None of these folks showed up when I lived on campus and white supremacists with tikki torches yelling “Jews will not replace us” marched through campus as I hid my three kids.

Unarmed students didn’t erect gallows on the National Mall.

Unarmed students didn’t try to violently overturn an election.

Unarmed students didn’t attempt to assault or kill elected officials.

Our students are trying to stop a genocide.
