Saddened to learn of the passing of Ed Broadbent former leader of the NDP and truly a great Canadian. I was fortunate to meet him as a farm leader and as an MP. His vision of what Canada could be and his fight for policies to benefit Canadians was from his heart. A great loss.

Lot of talk this morning about this being the last week of the Parliament sitting before summer recess. Really!! with Mark Holland’s hybrid Parliament passed without real debate - isn’t Parliament just a place for MP’s to visit in the future? Whether for debate or a vote!!

Hybrid Parl (7) MPs present work across Party lines to hold Government to account. After all, Parliament is Supreme, not a Prime Minister and not a Cabinet and Parliament works best when MPs are present in both mind and body. Isn’t that why you ran to be a Member of Parliament?

Hybrid Parl (6) the key reason to strongly oppose a hybrid Parliament is it takes political and decision making authority away from MPs and passes that authority to the Executive Branch – the PMO in other words. MPs need to be present to challenge that authority, build alliances

Hybrid Parl (5) MPs have a responsibility to be present for votes, in my view, not to be relaxing at home or even attending something in the riding – Constituency weeks are designed for events and work at home.

Hybrid Parl (4) Voting virtually may be convenient, however it just gives the whips office of all Party’s greater control and runs the risk of MPs just becoming voting machines at the direction of their center.

Hybrid Parl(3) MP’s present build alliances within the caucus, with Members of other Parties and speak directly to Ministers behind the curtains on issues of concern. When organizations come to Ottawa they expect to see MPs in person not on some internet feed.

Hybred Parl (2) MP’s being present at Committees is critical to do their work properly so they can build relationships across Party lines, chat with guests on the sidelines and feel the emotions of witnesses and Members.

Let me put it this way: If you don’t want to work in Ottawa during the Parliamentary sessions – don’t run to be an MP. A hybrid Parliament made sense during Covid but it should never be permanent. I strongly oppose govt’s move to make it permanent.

This is what Ukrainians farmers think of Russia. We met with Ukrainian farmers for 3 days now both West and South of Kyiv. What courageous and resilient people doing their best to maintain the economy and some normalcy in their community. We all must reach out to support them.

I never tweet since I left elected politics. But Must say - was the man and woman who both accosted Freeland among those who spout “freedom”? Were they suggesting that the DPM should not have the freedom to visit Alberta?
