When the Wilderness Act was signed into law in 1964, this area was designated the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, making it one of the 'Original 54' Wilderness areas.

This good news applies to the entire Selway-Bitterroot, Gospel-Hump, Cecil D. Andrus-White Clouds, and Jim McClure-Jerry Peak Wildernesses, as well as parts of the River of No Return, Hells Canyon, Hemingway-Boulders, and Sawtooth Wildernesses.
