Nothing says “Happy Holidays” like a 3 megaton thermonuclear warhead lobbed 9000 miles! Of course those “godless commies” on the other side probably didn’t even believe in Santa Claus.

Another Wright Field project, now Air Force Research Lab - AFRL & Air Force Life Cycle Management Center.
Work in this area went back to the “Kettering Bug” of WWI, which mostly taught the Army Air Service/Corps/Force that preprogramming/auto control wasn’t accurate & active radio control was necessary

Nedd an assist: I remember reading something recently with a list/descriptions of the different types of aircraft “gremlins” during but can’t recall where/what that was. Sound familiar to anyone? Can’t recall if it was social media or an article.

The original Aerospaceplane was a victim of techno-enthusiasm. It started as a propulsion development effort in what’s now Air Force Research Lab - AFRL focused on the liquid air cycle engine, got grabbed in the post-Sputnik space rush, & turned into a whole vehicle program way too soon.

I’m still waiting on my “home-based aircraft.” Preferably atomic powered. With lots of chrome and a bubble canopy.

It only took about a decade between first flight and the first (documented) machine gun use on an airplane, though that was only about 3 years after the 1st military airplane was sold.

This “logic” from armchair history critics always astounds me. You can’t study the Roman Empire unless you were an emperor or legionnaire? You can’t study presidential history unless you were a president? You can’t study the space program unless you were an astronaut?

Contrary to popular belief, Paul Schmidt didn't develop the As 014 pulsejet and seems never to have worked for Argus - he had his own company, P. Schmidt. Schmidt did spend a decade developing the spring valve inlet - shutters - but his pulsejets never worked all that well. In

This crash is polarizing in the avgeek community. The Yeager narrative is that the NF-104 was dangerous & Chuck heroically managed not to die thru sheer skill. The other side is that he screwed the pooch by lack of precise flying.
Either way, the USAF lost a great training tool

Now apply this with space suits & you get an idea about how/why those were an underappreciated “long pole” in the tent, that nearly derailed the program’s moon-landing timeline. And how valuable the seamstresses at International Latex Corp (the Playtex bra people) were

I for one would be fascinated to watch Tesla/SpaceX/Elon attempt to build a turbine engine-powered fighter airplane using his own $$. It would either be a spectacular train wreck or something like with Will Roper called for as SAF/AQ.

Dear INABA Churu Premium Cat/Dog Treats & Foods your creamy cat treats are like feline cocaine. Our kitten Willy goes dumpster diving for the empty tubes and will chew on them until he’s extracted every bit of goo from inside, unless we catch him first.
