I like the economics culture of pushing people hard to see if their research claims hold up to scrutiny.

But it only works if you've established the idea of helping people succeed by honing their arguments.

The most effective criticism comes from the people rooting for you.

Ouch.

Development economics, ostensibly dedicated to improving the well-being of people in developing countries, is almost devoid of people based in those countries.

If you're getting a PhD in a social science, your comparative advantage isn't programming. It never will be.

Learn the statistical/programming language that will let you do the work you want to do most efficiently.

I agree. I like people who show up, every day. If you think about it, a colleague who works from home or from coffee shops reduces the social multiplier. Being there, being present is important for a research unit, for our junior colleagues, for our students.
