Antarctica has been exceptionally warm, and scientists may be seeing some of the effects. The Wilkins Ice Shelf had been historically stable, but scientists have noticed recent signs of structural weaknesses, potentially signaling a shift in the shelf’s stability.

“We had to launch this complex emergency response effort with partners to attempt to rescue and rehabilitate smalltooth #sawfish in hopes of preventing additional losses of this endangered species,” said Adam Brame, the sawfish recovery coordinator for NOAA Fish Southeast.
