Aging Curve for Swing Speed

I wouldn't pay too much attention to very left of chart. I'd just treat it swing speed is roughly flat until roughly age 31. After that, drop is quick

Which makes sense with everything we know. We didn't know the magnitude. Now we do.

This is one of those things that sounds incredibly obvious and easy to roll out, but as many find out, it’s not that simple.

There’s a lot of complexity in org building around this concept. It runs counter to a lot of big egos in players, coaches, scouts, and more.

There was a great pod on Foul Territory with Dr Keith Meister talking about how pitchers can reduce injuries. He said “be more like Dunning and Bradford” (both his patients- both now on the IL)
Probably coincidence but..could not resist posting the irony

This indicates that in-game bat speed is more important than batted barrel rate in terms of in-game production.

Nothing new to Driveline Baseball staff, but tough day in the office for the bat speed deniers.

Looking forward to the Savant/Statcast bat speed data becoming public!

Tons of research on pitching - free sources, waiting for those who truly want to learn to get started.

Many say they're interested. Few put forth the effort. It takes so little to be above-average... why not start today?

There is no question that Pitch Counts / Pitcher Abuse Points solved a huge problem in baseball. A dramatic overuse of pitchers was occurring.

But the evidence for increased restrictions is troubling... it may be counterproductive.

It is far from obvious that pitch counts and extreme pitch limits are a good thing, or even a neutral thing.

We just assume that shortening their outings and increasing their rest periods are good for their arm, or at the very least, do no harm.

But how sure can you be?

Some thoughts on pitcher workloads and why scaling them back isn't solving any problems.

If you shorten the volume, the pitcher will increase the intensity. They aren't dumb.

But when the distance is unknown, you provide them a learning opportunity.
