Rest in power, Prof Yvonne Mokgoro🕊️

A trailblazer & pioneer, Mokgoro was the first black woman judge on South Africa's newly established ConCourt in 1994, serving for 15 years.

She once said that Robert Sobukwe encouraged her to study law.

A sad day for SA.

Her moral compass never wavered.

It was an honour to clerk while she was still on the bench. Universally popular with clerks, court staff & judges, a hero to us.

She reminded 🇿🇦 that 'everyone' really means everyone under the Bill of Rights.

'Constitutional adjudication is quiet different from legislative process, because the courts are not a 'politically responsible institution' to be seized every 5 years by a majoritarian opinion' —Justice Yvonne Mokgoro (S v Makwanyane).

South Africans in New Zealand were the first to vote. And, Dr Nomaza Paintin-Mandela was the first South African to vote.
She claimed to be Nelson's niece.

She was neither a doctor, a Mandela, or even South African.
