Great umpiring by Rosebury and something other umps must look to emulate more

You must return the ball immediately.

It's clear who the Fk is for, yet he holds onto the ball unnecessarily long. It's probably only 1 or 2 seconds. But it allows defence to get back and set up.

I love the interaction in the first clip

You wouldn't hear an ump say 'you've got to do better than that' directly to a player these days.

Maybe I am old school, but I think we are poorer for it. Players and umpires are human, shouldn't expect either to be robotic.

Insufficient intent is never paid when the player with the ball is being touched when it goes out

Even though it's clear Andrews wants the boundary, Rankine needs to hold a step back and force him to dispose, or step over untouched (which would be a FK against)

This should not be a dangerous tackle FK

It meets no dangerous tackle criteria. No driving, no slinging, no excessive force, etc

He lands on his knee & sort of buckles over it. Making it look more dangerous than it was

I understand what the ump has thought, but FK isn't there

I'm happy with this being paid 50m. You have to return the ball after a FK.

Freo were within their rights to have a shot at goal, and by dropping the ball it gives extra time for the defence to get back on the goal-line and set up.

Good decision by the umpire

That's right - the interpretation was changed for a 'dummy' disposal - the mark should have been reset, instead of paying 50m

A poor concentration lapse late in the game by the umpire here

I thought overall last night's game was really well umpired. Well done to the umpires.

I do think insufficient intent should have been paid against Pendlebury here.

Kicks from the centre, no clear target, goes out - insufficient intent to keep it in play

The responsibility is always on the tackler to ensure it's a safe one.

With Owies head hitting the ground like that, it's always going to be a dangerous tackle. Even if he does create some of the momentum himself.

Correct decision

This is a good listen re McKay 50.

I'd been struggling to put into 280 characters my full thoughts on it.

While 'technically correct' to pay 50.
The best piece of umpiring in that scenario would have been to switch to Cripps manning the mark.

The ball is clearly out on the full (which is a FK to Gold Coast) and it's then punched away by the West Coast player.

Punching the ball away when you've just conceded a FK is a textbook, and pretty obvious, 50m penalty.

Good decision by the umpire here

Fantastic game!

No doubt some will find some examples in the last 10 minutes which could have been paid on a close watch - but on first view that was a very well umpired game!

A performance by all 3 teams to match the occasion. Well done all

Just an anecdotal (non-political) thought.

My enjoyment using this site has majorly decreased since Elon took over.

Porn bots in the replies to EVERY tweet, blue ticks for people with 7 followers, people I don't follow or want to hear from coming up in my main feed.

Not good

Correctly umpired

Once a 50m penalty is paid, any opposing players must clear the path to the next mark 50m upfield (sort of like a new protected zone). Hawkins fails to do so - concedes a 100m.

Parfitt makes contact when he was never a chance of marking. Initial 50 is there.

A note for young umpires:

Don't do what I did here and overthink calls - keep it simple.

Draper dived on it and the ball didn't emerge. That's Holding the ball. Regardless of anything else

Poor error from me! We move on...

I think this is a good statement

I can definitely see what the umpire was seeing with the ball being forced under by Walker.

But the AFL are saying It never fully leaves Draper after diving on it, so should still be HTB.

That's a fair call. HTB best decision

Tribunal isn't my area - but I've never been so utterly shocked and perplexed by one of their decisions as this

A player with 5 previous fines (3 of which for rough conduct) gets a clear dangerous tackle suspension downgraded due to their 'exemplary' record?

What on earth?
