自然科学の人達からは驚かれるが人文社会科学だと米国とかでも10年近く博士課程にいる人もざらにいる。たぶん給料出るし早く取るインセンティブも少ない。3年で出てそこら辺の商業出版から本を出すよりも、時間をかけてトップの大学出版から本を出した方が研究者としての道が開けるし。1/n

これは日本に限らず、他の国でも大体そうで、分野によって博士課程取得に係る時間が異なるのは普通のことだと思う。歴史学とか人類学の場合は研究対象地域での資料調査やフィールドワークに一年かそれ以上かかるのが普通なので、時間がかかる。

これ、ここ数年日本で大学教員してる知り合い（複数）から何度か聞いた。どうも自分が日本で院生やってた2000年代後半に比べると、大学院生の数が激減したおかげで、（ポストの数は増えていないにも関わらず）個々の院生が大学教員になれる可能性はだいぶ上がったと聞く。本当ならば良いことだ。
