Boastful, condescending, jingoistic comments that portray a country as unreservedly successful paired with disparaging remarks aimed at anyone who disagrees, with pejoratives such as 'colonialists', 'brainwashed', 'West lapdogs' - have no soft power and win zero hearts and minds.

Want to see an example how garbage 'reporting' about China/Taiwan are made? Look no other than this piece about 'China plans to interfere in Taiwan election', quoting Taiwan govt as 'source'. Let me break it down to you why this is such an illogical, low-IQ, trashy disinfo: 👇

Always appreciate the opportunity to catch up with China’s Ambassador to the US, Xie Feng 谢锋. We discussed 🇦🇺-🇨🇳 relations following Anthony Albanese’s successful visit to Beijing, plus the recent 🇺🇸-🇨🇳 summit in San Francisco.

There’s a reasonable discussion & debate to be had around 🇦🇺 position on Israel/Gaza. But it’s staggering to claim we must align with the 🇺🇸 position, lest be imperilled. If 🇺🇸 is so thin-skinned, then perhaps pinning 🇦🇺 national defence to AUKUS isn’t such a great idea.

I rarely tweet on issues outside my area of focus. But this an exception: what a fabulous example of an Australian public university hosting a deeply informed but diverse discussion on a matter of national importance: news, media orgs, digital platforms. Well done Centre for Media Transition!

“Small yard high fence” is a static metaphor—it keeps us from seeing the directional logic of US attempts to restrict China.

DC sees China as a threat and its tech advances as sinister. So the restrictions will keep expanding, in ways increasingly disordered and destabilizing.

In today’s Financial Review, a speculative look into what it might mean for the Democratic Party, and the Republicans, in 2024 if Biden has to step aside. Prudent to at least consider what this means for Australia.
