'The problem with declaring that testimony irrelevant is that it presumes inappropriately that the crimes for which Weinstein was charged happened in a vacuum.'

We learned more this week about how former President Trump would govern if reelected. In a wide-ranging interview with Time, he gave his most strident words yet about what he would do in a second term.

'If higher ed faculty are beholden to saying only what powerful people want them to say, & if they stray out of the line they're going to get fired, we are living in an authoritarian society.' – Irene Mulvey, American Association of University Professors president

1 May 1840. The “Penny Black” stamp went on sale in Britain. It was the world’s first adhesive postage stamp, and the brainchild of Sir Roland Hill. It helped establish a national postal service. By setting the charge at one penny it made sending letters affordable for everyone.

1 May 1956. The Polio vaccine, developed by American medical researcher Dr. Jonas Salk, was made available to the public in the USA. Polio cases fell from 58,000 per year to 6,000 by 1958. Salk’s vaccine was later replaced by a new one developed by Albert Sabin in 1962.

If anyone wants perspective on college radio reporting and student protests, my email is open. I have an entire book on the subject (and not the one I just published!)

Long Covid day 465. I just left my doctor’s office, and she doesn’t think I’ll ever recover. She only has one Long Covid patient who has 100% recovered. So yeah, I guess that was my life, done at 32, lol—so much for those super mild variants. Thanks for nothing, public health.

Women's choices myth: That women's lower pay is the result of their free choice for lower-paying careers is a stubborn myth. Women's 'choices' are constrained by societal pressures for women to be the caretakers and men to be the breadwinners.

has given me cerebral small vessel disease, reactive gliosis, endothelial damage, reduced cerebral vasomotor reactivity, & reduced cerebrovascular reserves (lack of blood flow in the brain). This is likely what the vessels in my brain look like. This does not end well.

For women who report rape, there is supposed to be safety & credibility in numbers. The NY judges found the # of Weinstein's accusers unfair to him. When one woman speaks up about a man's sexual violence, it's not enough. More than 1=too many.Moira Donegan theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

These arrests are antithetical to the mission of higher ed. Our institutions exist to foster robust exchanges of ideas & open dialogue in service of knowledge & understanding. Sometimes that includes open dissent. Peaceful campus protests should never be met w/ violence.
