Coming up….will be talking about one health and prevention of pandemics. Is it possible? In my view, we should try, but that is not simple. Scientifically it may be doable, politically is another level of complexity. Discuss rebalancing our footprint? belgian-presidency.consilium.europa.eu/en/events/euro…

Quick thread on the Astra Zeneca (AZ) covid vaccine since it's been in the news today.

TLDR there isn't a new 'smoking gun', the AZ vax was one of first and cheapest, it saved millions of lives globally, there are better vax out there now, adapted to new variants 1/9

Out of 33 dairy farms in 8 U.S. states (+1 dairy farm in Colorado), 23 people have been tested for highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 by states. Less than 1 person per farm. This seems a clear answer to the question: “Are we testing enough for H5N1?”

Let's jump back in time to 2015.

Where they identified that, surprise, surprise...

✅ Little shown respiratory symptoms for infected cows.

✅ A HUGE reduction of milk production.

And they cite studies back in 1997 and 1998 showing the same thing.

Why weren't these studies discussed by the CDC?

Helen Branswell 🇨🇦 Alexander Tin, is what I would be asking. Thank you either way!

Apologies if I sound harsh in my comment about H5N1 public genomic data. It is such an important global question and now it is weeks and weeks of mention of widespread cases in mammals in the USA and data not public. Public data is the cornerstone of public health response.

New and stricter rules in the USA as of 29 April 2024 for:
(1) mandatory testing for interstate movement of dairy cattle for highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1, and
(2) mandatory reporting in any livestock of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1.
