This upstream supply chain security attack is the kind of nightmare scenario that has gotten people describing it called hysterical for years.

It’s real. Sleep well.

Lots of analysis of the xz/liblzma vulnerability. Most skip over the first step of the attack:

0. The original maintainer burns out, and only the attacker offers to help (so the attacker inherits the trust of the project built by the maintainer).

Darren Shepherd Not at all. But these folks were all maintainers of redis, and they wanted to keep working on it. That their employers also needed one is a bonus. This is open source routing around damage.

As far as I'm concerned, Redis has been renamed to Valkey, while Redis Ltd. has created a non-free fork and confusingly named it 'Redis'.

The project with the license change is the fork, not the project which continues the original work under new management.

And now, a brief aside about naming. We had a delightful open source thread about naming here, github.com/valkey-io/valk…. Given all of the involvement, I was so sure the name was going to be easy to pick, how little did I realize this would overshadow my week.

I'm really excited to announce that our Redis fork both has a new name (Valkey) and was accepted into the Linux foundation, linuxfoundation.org/press/linux-fo…. This has been such an amazing effort by my fellow co-creators of the project and the linux foundation.

The last week or so has been truly exciting and encouraging. We've seen not one but two self-organizing communities of developers gather efforts to move Free and Open Source software forward collaboratively, where all are invited participate and benefit.

Exciting to see the launch of Valkey, an open source alternative to the Redis in-memory, NoSQL data store.

Hosted by the Linux Foundation, Valkey will continue development on Redis 7.2.4 under the BSD 3-clause license. linuxfoundation.org/press/linux-fo…

I've gotten together with various former Redis contributors and we've started working on a fork: github.com/madolson/place…. We are all unhappy with the license change, and are looking to build a new truly open community to fill the void left by Redis. Come join us!
