I flipping hate this move so much. Sudanese people have stood alongside Palestinians for *time*, and are almost never the people peddling this line - the folks doing this as bad faith actors using a horrific situation to make a gotcha political point, not bc they care about Sudan

Framing this as a “suppression of discourse” is galling. PEN America expected writers to keep providing them with labor and time while ignore the org’s glaring “except for Palestine” stance. Writers said no and the org has refused to change. So writers have withdrawn their labor.

I’ve withdrawn my book from consideration for the PEN/Voelcker, in solidarity w/ the people of Gaza & all who oppose the genocidal tactics being used against them. The slowness of PEN America leadership to do so has sadly compromised the integrity of the awards & organization.

It colours every silence on the phone, every text. It’s tough to write about a thing when you’re still in its grip. So I don’t have a lot of words here, just maybe a reminder that the horrors of right now are vast and pervasive, and yet you should regularly look them in the eye.
