Worth remembering HECS is a progressive tax (almost exclusively paid by the top half of the income distribution). Lowering HECS requires more taxes or less Govt spending elsewhere. Also there is almost no link between HECS and uni participation.

Absolutely fascinating that elected members and even heads of state attend protests now

Either the protesters demands are incoherent emotive nonsense or govts doesn’t even know what to do, or both

One of the few countries in the OECD that don’t index tax brackets

Treasury did a paper on it, even indexation to CPI isn’t adequate in addressing bracket creep

Super high exec complaining prevalence of white men at work

I get it seems clever if they feel exceptional; long term odd thing to contribute to given their husbands, children, other family

And no guarantee DEI won’t demote upper class white female daywalker status one day?

Interesting facts:

- One of only 4 OECD countries not indexing brackets

- 60% higher tax burden on gross wages v OECD average.

- add that to record mining sector tax revenues and Chalmers is swimming in cash.
