In Russia, 9 May is Victory Day; in Uzbekistan, it is the Day of Memory & Honour. There's a critical difference: Uzbekistanis understand no one is victorious in war & everyone suffers. That's why Uzbekistan's main war memorials don't show soldiers but their grieving mothers.

Highly recommend everyone to visit Informational Museum in Khiva. A very good collection of crazy artifacts: the first Soviet TV 'KVN', Brezhnev's era satellite car phone, Bulgarian PC 'Pravets' and other fun stuff. Located to the right from WW2 monument.

Trust me, this is fantastic: famous mosaics of Tashkent were animated and carefully stored at the special website: mosaic.tashkent.uz/en. You can browse all of them, and find the history. Fun-fact: authors of the concept, Jarskiy brothers, were born and have studied in France.

What a nice thing to see that Erich Maria Remarque is still popular in Uzbekistan. Look at those great books which are in Uzbek language!
