What I really don't get is the voluntary data collections/corrections. 'Cause once this stuff is good enough in our languages, food, culture.. they will sell it right back to us. At exorbitant prices, because that's what they've always done.

In sum, students have always been at the forefront of movements, but moreover, cross-campus solidarity matters. What’s heartening is the way that they are reinvigorating pro-Palestine action, learning from each other's struggles, and exposing common concerns across campuses.

It's stunning to me that this administration in particular, the US gov in general, 'the West' by extension, doesn't seem to understand that the credibility they've torched cannot be regained.

This. And these newly signed accords to watermark content etc.. are not going help much for many of the world's population that's voting this year. Even people who work in tech fall for some of these fakes, what's to say of people further out?

Remember how Boeing tried to convince us that the ET plane crashed because the Ethiopian pilot was not qualified?

As a counterpoint to the 'tech moves so fast/can't keep up' trope, I'd like to point out that many of the issues actually don't change. Here's me in 2019 arguing against proposals to use LLMs as a source of info about the world -- and already worrying about the info ecosystem.

Love this. Laws should not change just because people use AI or some other tech. In fact so many of the discussions we have about AI harms are already legislated...it's just that tech companies want to be excused because they are going to save us all... eventually
