'Private collection, France, and by descent until,
Anonymous sale; Ader, Paris, 21 June 2022, lot 13, as Flemish School, 17th century, Circle of Van Dyck'
This very light provenance statement for a van Dyck ptg worth $3-500,000 makes us wonder....

Durand-Ruel, Paris (acquired directly from the artist in November 1899 and until 1941)
A. & R. Ball, New York (acquired by 1959
Silly question:
if the painting was sold in 1941, how did the painting survive the war without being seized?
Just curious.

Maybe Ms. Thyssen-Bornemisza should sit down with the Spanish government and figure out how to restitute the claimed Pissarro currently displayed in the museum bearing her family's name. You know, do the right thing...

Nothing impressive about it. Even the antiquities seemed to have been removed from backroom drawers. Just a handful of works stood out as well as Japanese and Korean artists whose presence was definitely refreshing. Exception was definitely Isamo Noguchi.

Is this the future? Using the Washington Principles as an insurance policy to sell works not proven to have been looted--a 'just in case' approach? A total joke which makes a mockery of restitution. A boondoggle if there ever was one!
