A great dive into the latest data on shotspotter. It taught me a lot about the messiness of response time data, and the importance of talking to multiple sources to interpret statistics for the public.

I give the authors of the original study credit here for making all their data and code open access. That is, in fact, not the norm in a lot of policing research.

Huh, my book is back on the Amazon best seller list. Are people suddenly interested in endowments for some reason?

This literally IS policing. This is not a deviation from the norm.

Violence is inherent to the institution of policing itself, and cops enjoy vast discretion in how and when they dispense physical violence and brutality, knowing they can do so with impunity.

As we see police in dozens of cities beating philosophy professors, tackling economics scholars, body slamming Fox camera people, and putting chains on 100s of students singing songs and enjoying seder, it's important to see that these are not a few bad apples.

A question for my social scientists out there - are there any studies suggesting that police traffic stops reduce crime? Or anything on their benefits?

Funny how Chicago taxpayers concerned with effective city spending are asked to make an exception when alders in high crime wards want to spend on ineffective technology like shotspotter. I hope alders reject this absurd “you don’t live here” logic.
