This is a clear indication of how affordability checks will be blamed for all of racing’s ills. Not the switching to turnover based model, diluting of the racing product, backing of FOBTs, turning a blind eye to restrictions, failing to reinvest media rights in prize money etc.

I agree with this, but may be wrong in doing so.
Putting FOBTs in shops and on the web has (many years down the line after draining users of cash) caused the current issues which include sports punters who like a small bet at weekends facing affordability checks.

In which as head of the BHA Nick Rust lobbied the government not to introduce £2 limits on FOBTs for the supposed good of racing. The meritocracy rolls on.

Racing getting into bed with the bookmakers over FOBTs was so short sighted, and now it’s coming home to roost sadly. They should have fought the deregulation and blurring of lines between games of skill and chance right from the outset. Too late now.

SimonNott back in the 80s / 90s i would spend 3 or 4 hours a day in a betting shop. in the last 3 years i have spent less than 20 hours in betting shops but have seen these fobts smashed or kicked on at least 10 occasions, most problem gamblers are playing them.
