Now that’s a REAL ! After posting about how the recent X1 flares wouldn’t have been considered so under the previous solar cycle, last night the Sun produced an unambiguously large event, clocking in at X4.4. This makes it the 3rd largest flare since 2017!

The Sun has been popping off multiple solar flares this week, including two X-class events (the highest flare category) over the past day. This movie shows these two flares, observed in ultraviolet light by the Solar Dynamics Observatory.

Something from the Sun *appears* to be heading our way! Following a series of non-eruptive flares from a different region, region 13664 stepped up overnight with an eruptive X1-class flare. A *lot* could change on its way, but preliminary analysis suggests impact early May 11th.

We see AR3664 as it was evolving that is generating X class benagals, some bright bridges are observed, it will surely send more flares, let's wait to see its evolution.

In addition to the large sunspot group and numerous solar flares, these two large prominences (over the Sun’s edge) have been stunning to watch too, even through amateur H-alpha telescopes. One of these broke apart last night, seen here in GOES/SUVI data

Historic solar flares are hitting planet earth as we speak and I’m tweeting on X and nothing is happening.

Either X is solar flare proof or these shrooms are kicking in.
