Today is also the feast of St Fidelis of Sigmaringen (1577-1622), a Capuchin friar from southern Germany, martyred by Calvinists in eastern Switzerland, since he was so effective in winning heretics back to the Faith. Canonized in 1746.
The mayor of a city for a time, this saint became a Capuchin and begged that he might be sent among those who would, in return for his service, give him the palm of martyrdom, for he wished to die for Christ Whom alone he loved...

For a time he was a lawyer advocating for the poor. He entered the Capuchin Order and was sent on a mission to Switzerland. He converted so many Huguenots and Calvinists that his enemies grew furious and stabbed him to death.
